Making History

“Every movement we make in response to God has a ripple effect, touching family, neighbors, friends, community. Belief in God alters our language. Love of God affects daily relationships. Hope in God enters into our work. Also their opposites – unbelief, indifference, and despair. None of these movements and responses, beliefs and prayers, gestures and searches, can be confined to the soul. They spill out and make history. If they don’t, they are under suspicion of being fantasies at best, hypocrisies at worst.

Christians have always insisted on the historicity of Jesus – an actual birth, a datable death, a witnessed resurrection, locatable towns. There is a parallel historicity in the followers of Jesus. As they take in everything Jesus said and did – all of it a personal revelation of God in time and place – it all gets worked into local history, eventually into world history.”

Introduction to Philemon in the Message Bible

As you live out your faith in prayer and fasting for the Songhai people, you are a part of making world history. Lives are being changed, villages being impacted by the Gospel of Christ and eternity being altered for those who choose to follow Him. Where will it end, how will the Mustard Seed Prayer groups affect history? We have no idea but this one thing we know for sure:

“After this I looked, and there was a vast multitude from every nation, tribe, people and language (INCLUDING THE SONGHAI), which no one could number, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were robed in white with palm branches in their hands. And they cried out in a loud voice:

‘Salvation belongs to our God,
Who is seated on the throne,
and to the Lamb!’” Revelation 7:9-10

Continue the battle for the souls of the Songhai and let’s make some heavenly history!

Prayers against strongholds that have captured the Songhai.

As you pray and fast this month, join with us in asking God to tear down strongholds and open up the ancient gates that have been closed, preventing the Songhai to hear, understand and respond to the Gospel. Take care in asking God to do this as we are not capable in our own power to undue the works of the enemy.

“Open up, ancient gates! Open up, ancient doors, and let the King of glory enter. Who is the King of glory? The Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord, invincible in battle. Open up, ancient gates! Open up, ancient doors, and let the King of glory enter. Who is the King of glory? The Lord Almighty; He is the King of glory!” Psalms 24:7-10

The Ancient Gate of False Religion: Our people have been lost in the Islamic faith and animistic rituals for hundreds of years. Pray that the strongholds of Satan will be torn down and that our people will see the falsehood of their religion and ritual.

The Ancient Door of Tradition: To be Songhai is to be Muslim. To be Songhai is to be deeply involved with the world of evil and controlling spirits. Pray that the binding, religious traditions and customs, which have formed the Songhai culture, will be exposed for what they are. Pray for the Songhai to search for the freedom of our Savior.

The Ancient Gate of the Unknown: The Gospel of Jesus Christ is unknown to the majority of the Songhai. There is a great need for committed Christians who will invest their lives so that the Songhai can hear, understand and respond to God’s love. Pray for workers to come and help. Be willing yourself to do what it takes to bring the Songhai to Him.

Many times we pray in generalities for God to provide workers for the harvest in a place very far away, places often unsafe or undeveloped. But we never once think He might answer the prayer that has come from our own lips by saying, “Great! Would you go?” Or, “I sure will!!! Would you allow your child to go?” Pray for a willingness to be obedient to overseas missions, if called. Pray for ways you can take on supportive roles to missionaries overseas, giving hands and feet to your prayers. Pray for a willingness to live and work and raise a family in far away places where you expect God to send others to do so.
