Interesting Video

Someone brought this to my attention, and I thought it was really interesting. It's a vlog from Penn Jillett (from Penn and Teller fame). Those unfamiliar with him, he's a pretty militant atheist (and very vocal about it). In this clip he's recounting a story of a man at one of his shows giving him a Gideon's Bible. You can tell he's pretty moved by it, and makes one heck of a good point about sharing the word of God (starts at about the three minute mark). It's a pretty interesting clip, especially given how critical Penn has been of Christians (and religion in general) in the past.

Cool video,

It really shows me how showing the love of Jesus can effect even the strongest atheist. I think the biggest thing it shows me is that the Holy Spirit is the one who works on a man, we are just vessels. From watching that, I believe that man was effected by the Holy Spirit. I pray he comes to know our Jesus.

Cool stuff

I think a lot of everyone's hesitation comes from lack of training and practice. If church's could utilze programs like Evangelism Explosion etc. and organize training and events it would be much easier. Sadly most churches leave it up to it's members alone. For church and kingdom growth though, it's essential we do it.

I agree, however even if Church's offer it, very few attend. Well, in the case of our church anyway. We have had evangelism classes/training for around a year now. In a church of 1000 (give or take), I would say only 50 or so have attended at any given time. I'm reminded of the book "Blue like jazz," where the author talks about high attendance for fun stuff, but low attendance for prayer meetings. I think the same applies here.

Our church is currently doing two outreaches (not including mission trips). The first is local, walking the streets on Wednesday nights in the "bad part" of town, which is close to our church. It's not really door-to-door evangelism because most people hang out outside. Our members are building relationships with these people, which is really great. I really would love to do this, but work/scheduling is difficult.

The second are called Judean mission trips. A group will go on a Friday to a city and take very little with them. No cell phones, etc. They stay at a church in that city and evangelize on that Saturday. The guy who ring leads this got the idea from the Bible (of all places :)) when the disciples are called to go and to take nothing with them (you know the story). So a while back, this guy paid $100 to Greyhound and he could go anywhere Greyhound goes in 7 days. He took a backpack and gospel tracks. No phone, no food, no money. He wrote a book about it http://www.amazon.com/Nothing-But-Faith ... 757&sr=8-1

Anyway, I don't think people really want to evangelize.
