New Ministry - Men of Valor

Postby Tim Elf on Tue May 08, 2007 4:33 pm

Hello, everyone. I haven't been on here in quite a while... Okay, months. :?

Short explanation: I had to cut down on my internet usage. I quit hanging out on several message boards, and only kept two that I've been a member of for the longest time (joecustoms and one other). That doesn't mean I thought less of this board (or any of the others I quit) - I just had to cut back.

Anyway, something has happened that led me to think I really should post here again. This may seem somewhat selfish, but this is not the kind of thing I can get post on the other boards. Well, I can post it, but I won't get much support.

Some of you know about the Men of Valor retreat that I've been doing for my church for the last five years. It's a two-day retreat for high school guys only. I based much of the material on the book we're all talking about so much - Every Young Man's Battle. But over the years, I've adapted it a lot and added/subtracted here and there. So it's a purity weekend, but it's super-intense, both in the teaching and the activities - gladiator duels, airsoft wars, etc.

After the success of this year's retreat, I felt God asking me to expand things. He gave me a pretty audacious dream that I hope to see happen someday, but it's going to take a lot of time and effort.

The beginnings of all this can be seen now at http://www.menofvalor.cc. I've started offering this retreat to other churches.

This Thursday, I'm driving up to Illinois to do a Men of Valor retreat for a friend's church up there (Elkville, in case anyone's wondering). I have two more tentatively scheduled for the Fall, one local and one in Georgia.

I'd appreciate your prayers as I'm embarking on this new ministry... that, in time, could end up becoming my full-time occupation.

It's great to see you back Tim.

I'll keep that in prayer. If I understand you right, it's for teen guys that are already believers right?

Yes, it's intended to be. But the first session focuses on salvation just in case - and to make the point that if you don't believe in a relationship with Christ, all this "purity" stuff will be absolute nonsense to you.

Haven't looked at the site yet, but I will. Still great to hear.

If you need help in the summer, let me know. My summer is pretty free starting the end of May, so I am looking for great things to do.

I'm back from my trip to Illinois. Wheeeee.

Everything went really well. Low attendance, but that was sort of expected. I'll have pics on my website later.

I now have two more possible retreats to be scheduled, making at least six for the year so far...

Baby is due August 10th (but both previous kids have been 2-3 weeks early).

So because of that, I'm not overly upset that nothing much is happening with MoV right now.

I've got the legal papers filed with the state of Texas to form my non-profit organization, Valor Ministries. Now I'm working on the IRS stuff, which is about a BILLION times more complicated.

Updated the website some more. Working on paper promo materials - brochure, etc.

I have one retreat scheduled for Sept. 21-22. Plenty of time after the baby's born.

Next month, Men of Valor is going to be featured and promoted on an email mailing list that goes out to over 700 pastors and Christian leaders. I expect things will pick up after that happens...

Sounds like a lot of good things happening Tim. Keep us updated, and always let us know if we can do anything to help.

I know there is lots of excellent talent here, so I thought I'd make a request.

I'm looking for a cartoonist/illustrator to design a knight "mascot" for me.

This is for Men of Valor. You can read all about it above or at the website: http://www.menofvalor.cc I'm working on redesigning a lot of the material, especially the workbook/handbook, and I'm trying to get rid of some of the cheaper stock art.

What I'm wanting is a knight, a cartoon-image, but not goofy or anything, preferably in several poses (defensive posture, brandishing sword, kneeling, etc.). Even one single pose would be helpful. Sword and shield are a must. The best format would be vector-based (EPS, AI).

This is a non-profit organization and I have no money at this time, so I would not be able to pay you at this time. I would give you full credit, of course, and if things grow as I hope they do, I might be able to pay something in the future.

PM/email me with any ideas.

MINISTRY UPDATE.

I have a new retreat coming up next weekend and appreciate prayer.

The website, http://www.menofvalor.cc, has been polished and updated and is looking pretty good. Now I'm starting to advertise. I just got an email list of local youth pastors that I'm going to contact.

Oh, that previous email mailing list was a bust. No responses whatsoever. :(

I've also just emailed someone I met through ChristianFictionReview that could... COULD... turn into something big. I don't want to say anything about it, but pray for it, if you can (as vague as I've made it....).

Still have IRS stuff to do.

Time for some kind of update, I guess.

Nothing has come of email advertising yet.

We had our church's annual Men of Valor retreat two weeks ago. It was a great success and confirmed my calling even more.

I'm going back to my friend's church in Illinois next weekend.

I'm thinking I'm not going to get very far with this ministry until we get some land of our own. I'm looking into that and considering doing some kind of fund-raising in late summer/fall.
